The Official Explanation
The extra sensory powers and ability for sporadic / limited communication with the spirits that I occasionally demonstrate via public performance, is enabled by a very special key. I found this key in my Uncle Abram’s collection of occult items. According to his records, it belonged to a purportedly haunted house. The house has long since been lost to a fire. The key is all that remains...and perhaps certain memories from the home remain within the key.
I have hypothesized that the key acts as a “collecting pole” of people’s relatively small extra sensory powers. By collecting “a thousand small points of power”, the key combines them into a single strong point of power. This single strong point enables one to "ride" the "extrasensory web" and open a channel to the spirit world. It is sporadic, because sometimes one has less than “a thousand points of power” to draw from. In other words, the cumulative power frequently varies -- not so much due to the number of participants taking part in my demonstrations, but due more to their ability to remain focused on their limited extra sensory powers.
I typically do not have the key on me except when demonstrating extra sensory effects and/or communication with the spirit world for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I do not want to unintentionally receive the personal thoughts of others. Sometimes the key fires extra powerfully (picking up energy from a particularly accomplished psychic?) and I may receive personal information, to which I should not have access. Additionally, a side effect of the key is the sporadic disruption of television signals, cell phone signals, erasure of computer discs, etc.. This would raise havoc with other typical day-to-day activities.
